Scott Griffiths (aka Optamus)

Founder – HIPHOP101 | MC & Producer | Member of Downsyde | Youth Facilitator

Professional Bio
Scott Griffiths, known as Optamus, is a founding member of Perth’s iconic hip-hop group Downsyde, active since 1996. With multiple national albums and awards—including the Australian Dance Music Award for Best Debut Artist—and a legacy that spans generations, Downsyde’s music has accumulated tens of millions of streams across Spotify and other platforms, cementing their place as pioneers in Australian hip-hop.

Beyond performance, Scott is the founder of HIPHOP101, a transformative initiative that delivers hip-hop-based workshops to young people from marginalised, multicultural, and First Nations communities, as well as within correctional settings across Australia and New York.

He has established a multitude of programs throughout the community and justice system, including:

  • Wandoo Reintegration Facility, where he led Rap’n’Radio, a program credited with achieving reoffending rates less than half the state average.
  • Casuarina Prison, home to the only autonomous, hip-hop-run program in the country.
  • Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre, where he spearheaded the creation of significant resources including a professional recording studio, performance space, and hip-hop-themed therapeutic chill-out zones.

From schools and remote First Nations communities to maximum-security prisons, Scott continues to bridge culture, mentorship, and healing—empowering the next generation of young people through music, education, and creative leadership.
