Professional Bio
Dr. Alexander Crooke (he/him) is a beat maker, electronic musician/instrument designer, DJ, researcher, and international consultant. After earning two undergraduate degrees in social and political sciences and working for six years in adolescent mental health, he completed a PhD in music therapy and social policy at the University of Melbourne.

Dr. Crooke’s work focuses on wellbeing, cultural responsiveness, and sustainability within school-based arts programs. He has been a leading voice in integrating Hip Hop and beat making practices into academic, therapeutic, and community settings across Australia. His contributions include:

  • Designing and delivering the first Hip Hop and beat making curriculum within UniMelb’s Music Therapy program
  • Conducting research on the educational and therapeutic benefits of Hip Hop and beat making
  • Providing school consultation and public lectures on Hip Hop’s cultural and emotional affordances
  • Creating and facilitating short courses focused on the community, educational, and therapeutic applications of Hip Hop

He is also the co-founder and senior consultant of Change Indicators, an arts-based consultancy, and teaches, mentors, and consults internationally with universities and community organizations. Dr. Crooke collaborates globally to explore, document, and promote the individual and social impacts of Hip Hop, while supporting early career academics and practitioners in the field.
